I want to reflect on some of the questions that were asked in class.
Would you allow your child of 13. to use social media?
In the beginning, I placed myself in the rather yes camp. This didn’t change but I had some doubts at the end. When it comes to the internet a responsible usage would be important to me so I’d want my child to get to know this space at its own pace. Shutting it out to such a big space wouldn’t feel right to me. There are definitely dangers as well in terms of predators or a harmful development when it comes to the image you have of yourselves but I feel the benefits outweigh the views as a completely safe environment isn’t a good thing either in my mind. There is a good chance that I would change my opinion if I actually had kids.
Is using filters for photography of nature okay?
Personally, I don’t see the problem. The way we depict and sense nature is a subjective thing for me. Even with filters we can express ourselves.
Is using a face filter okay?
I wouldn’t forbid its use but I don’t like it. It gives a lot of people unrealistic expectations of how we are supposed to look. Self-esteem issues can have a problematic impact on the development of a person.
Would you be comfortable with wearing smart lenses?
Yes and no. There are a lot of factors for me that would go into that decision. It would depend on who made the glasses and what the specific functions of it are. Trust would be a huge factor so unless id get an exact insight into how the product works and what happens to my data I don’t think I’d use it. It also would depend on how useful the product actually is. Sometimes usefulness outweighs the concerns I have with a product.
Would you be okay with wearing a chip under your skin that tracks your health?
Only in specific cases. If I were a person with a risk of seizure or some other medical condition that could suddenly pop up I would wear one. If everyone would wear one then I’d be against it. Too many medical check-ups aren’t a good thing as there can often be false positives. If you look hard enough you can always find something and every person has different needs so I think it would be rather counterproductive.
Are you trying to reduce your ecological footprint?
I feel like the ecological footprint is kind of an outdated concept that needs to be updated. It gives people a very rough idea of how eco-friendly they are compared to others. More often than not I see people using it as an excuse to play a numbers game. Saying that because you are eco-friendly in one area this allows you to be a little more wasteful in another.
